With the advances in medical science, people are living longer, healthier lives. However, despite a longer life expectancy, the retirement age in India remains at 60. This means that many find themselves starting a new phase of life without a regular income, regardless of their desire or ability to continue working. Unlike developed countries with robust social security systems, India provides limited support for its retired population. Only 10% of retired employees receive a pension, leaving the remaining 90% to rely on their savings, which often dwindle within a few years. As a result, many elders find themselves financially dependent on their children or family members.
But there's hope! Nightingales Medical Trust (NMT) is here to bridge this gap with our Livelihoods & Empowerment Programs. We understand the importance of helping recently retired, financially insecure elderly go back to work and stay independent for longer.
Elder abuse is a serious issue that often lurks in the shadows, but it's time to bring it into the light. Imagine being harmed by those you trust the most—whether through physical, emotional, psychological, or financial distress. Unfortunately, this is a reality for many seniors. Elder abuse can come from close family members, friends, neighbors, and even paid caregivers.
At NMT, we are committed to tackling elder abuse by spreading awareness, offering support, and advocating for our seniors. Together, we can create a society where every elder feels safe, respected, and valued. Let's turn the tide on elder abuse and ensure a brighter, safer future for all our seniors.
Growing older should be about celebrating life's experiences and not about struggling to survive. Yet in India many elders find themselves in a tough spot, relying on their children or having to work just to put food on the table. Unlike other countries, our elders often have to fend for themselves, and the daily survival can be a daunting task, especially for those earning a daily wage or coming from low income backgrounds.
NMT has conceived and established several age care projects to assist these marginalized elderly who need assistance for daily sustenance and are left to fend for themselves.
Nightingales Medical Trust with its well-equipped training department has been providing quality training and education in the field of dementia and eldercare for years now. The training programs makes use of traditional training methods along with technical advancements to serve the right purpose and move along with changing times.
Nightingales Medical Trust works closely with the government to ensure the drafting and implementation of elder-friendly policies and this is done through NMT’s Awareness and Advocacy programme.
